What is Difference Between Lotion and Body Butter?
Body lotion is much thinner than body butter. Body butter is very thick and perfect for dry skin but really all skin types.
Just a small amount of body butter goes a very long way. You will be surprised how little you need to use and how long body butter lasts.
Ingredients
- ¼ Cup Shea Butter
- ¼ Cup Cocoa Butter
- ¼ Cup Coconut Oil
- ¼ Cup Jojoba Oil. You can also use sweet almond oil as a substitution.
- 25-30 drops of Essential Oils (Optional)
Step By Step Instructions
Step 1. Add all the ingredients except the essential oils to a saucepan or pot. We did not use a double boiler.
Step 2. Use low heat until all the ingredients are completely melted. Stir until combined. Once you melt the ingredients, remove the pan from the heat and allow the oils to solidify either at room temperature or put it in the freezer or fridge to speed up the process. I normally place in the refrigerator. You want it to be slightly a solid but not completely. When you touch the mixture, your finger should leave an indentation.
Step 3. If you are using essential oils, add them now. You do not want to heat essential oils as it could cause chemical changes in the oils. Then whisk the ingredients with a hand mixer or you can use a stand mixer. Mix for at least 15 minutes until it looks like whip cream.
Step 4. Store inside an airtight glass jar or container. Make sure it has a good lid.
FAQ
Feel free to use what you prefer but I like to use Lavender Essential Oil or Peppermint Essential Oil. You can add more if you want the scent to be stronger. I also like frankincense or vanilla for another fragrance.
If you want more of a citrus scent, use citrus oils such as lemon or orange.
If your body butter is not thick enough, try freezing it. Don’t let it freeze solid but just partially frozen.
Next, try whipping the body butter and it should have a thicker consistency. It is very simple and easy.
I bet the kids will love to help. If you have kids that are all about DIY projects, they will have a blast helping to make homemade body butter.
Try adding more coconut oil and essentials oils and mixing together until the right consistency. Keep whipping until it is the desired consistency.
You do not have to use beeswax to make body butter. However, you can if you prefer.
Beeswax helps the body butter hold up better in warm weather. If you plan to give body butter as a gift you might consider adding beeswax to the body butter.
Whipped body butter with beeswax is also very easy to make and just adds one extra step.
The shelf life is about 6 months if stored out of direct sunlight.
You can add arrowroot powder, tapioca starch or cornstarch to the mixture. I would add 1 tablespoon.
