Body Butter in a jar.

This is one of our favorite diy projects. Your skin will be so smooth and soft after using this easy to make diy body butter.

Homemade body butter is so decadent and will leave you feeling pampered. Forget expensive trips to the spa because you can enjoy this luxurious body butter at home. I also love to make DIY Eye Cream and DIY Face Moisturizer.

It is so thick and perfect for all of those especially dry places. I love to use it on my knees and elbows because it instantly softens them.

It is really helpful in the winter when I get rough patches on my skin and this body butter instantly does the trick. It is really the best!

What is Difference Between Lotion and Body Butter?

Body lotion is much thinner than body butter. Body butter is very thick and perfect for dry skin but really all skin types.

Just a small amount of body butter goes a very long way. You will be surprised how little you need to use and how long body butter lasts.

Ingredients

Body Butter Ingredients - shea butter, cocoa butter, coconut oil, jojoba oil, essential oils.

Step By Step Instructions

Sauce pan with ingredients ready to heat.

Step 1. Add all the ingredients except the essential oils to a saucepan or pot. We did not use a double boiler.

Ingredients melted and combined.

Step 2. Use low heat until all the ingredients are completely melted. Stir until combined. Once you melt the ingredients, remove the pan from the heat and allow the oils to solidify either at room temperature or put it in the freezer or fridge to speed up the process. I normally place in the refrigerator. You want it to be slightly a solid but not completely.  When you touch the mixture, your finger should leave an indentation.

Mixture in a pan being beat with mixer.

Step 3. If you are using essential oils, add them now. You do not want to heat essential oils as it could cause chemical changes in the oils. Then whisk the ingredients with a hand mixer or you can use a stand mixer.  Mix for at least 15 minutes until it looks like whip cream.

FAQ

What type of essentials oils should I use?

Feel free to use what you prefer but I like to use Lavender Essential Oil or Peppermint Essential Oil. You can add more if you want the scent to be stronger. I also like frankincense or vanilla for another fragrance.

If you want more of a citrus scent, use citrus oils such as lemon or orange.

How can I thicken body butter?

If your body butter is not thick enough, try freezing it. Don’t let it freeze solid but just partially frozen.

Next, try whipping the body butter and it should have a thicker consistency. It is very simple and easy.

I bet the kids will love to help. If you have kids that are all about DIY projects, they will have a blast helping to make homemade body butter.

How do you fix body butter that is too hard?

Try adding more coconut oil and essentials oils and mixing together until the right consistency. Keep whipping until it is the desired consistency.

What about beeswax in body butter?

You do not have to use beeswax to make body butter. However, you can if you prefer.
Beeswax helps the body butter hold up better in warm weather. If you plan to give body butter as a gift you might consider adding beeswax to the body butter.

Whipped body butter with beeswax is also very easy to make and just adds one extra step.

How long will it last?

The shelf life is about 6 months if stored out of direct sunlight.

How to make body butter feel less greasy?

You can add arrowroot powder, tapioca starch or cornstarch to the mixture. I would add 1 tablespoon.
