The microwave can be a difficult appliance to clean until I discovered this simple and easy cleaning hack.  You only need 2 ingredients, and one is water, so I know you already have half of the ingredients!

Supplies to clean a microwave - vinegar and water.
  • ½ cup Water
  • ½ cup White vinegar

Variations

  • Essential Oils. You can add a few drops of essential oils to the mixture. It will leave a fresh scent in the microwave interior.

Step By Step Instructions

Step 1. First, put ½ cup of vinegar in the measuring cup or microwave-safe bowl. Then add ½ cup of water to the glass bowl or measuring cup.  I just filled my measuring cup to the top with the vinegar solution.

Step 2. Next, put the glass bowl or the measuring cup with vinegar mixture in your microwave uncovered.  Cook in the microwave uncovered for 5 minutes on high power.

Step 3. Cooking this mixture will create steam in the microwave that cleans and breaks-up tough stains in the microwave. It also helps to remove odors in microwaves. Be careful when opening the door as steam may escape the microwave door.

Step 4. After the cook time, remove the bowl of hot water or the measuring cup.  If your microwave oven has a turntable, remove that as well. Also, if it is dishwasher-safe, place in the dishwasher. If not, wash in the sink and soak. Then use a microfiber cloth, clean cloth, paper towel or sponge to clean off the steam that has built up on all sides of the microwave. The dirt, grime and splatter in the interior of the microwave will be removed with it! It is so easy to wipe down the mess and spills in the microwave after using the vinegar and water mixture. You can use a damp cloth if needed to clean the inside of residue and exterior of the microwave.

You can add one half of a lemon juice and the lemon to the mixture if you are sensitive to the smell of vinegar.  The lemon helps to cut down on the strong vinegar smell.

Can I use apple cider vinegar?

Just follow the same instructions as above except use apple cider vinegar. Easy!

How to clean a microwave with dish soap?

If you don’t have vinegar, add a teaspoon or 2 of dishwashing liquid to the mixture. After it has steamed, wipe down the microwave as instructed.

Can I clean the outside of the microwave?

Yes, I like to dip the cloth in the mixture to wipe down the handle. It is perfect to clean the outside of your microwave.
