If your kids enjoyed our Color Changing Homemade Playdough, they will have so much fun playing with this new DIY. It changes colors for such a fun activity with simple ingredients.
This is just as much fun to make as it is to play with. Everyone agreed it is much more fun to make this silly putty recipe than to buy it.
Supplies you need
- 1 Cup Sta-Flo Liquid Starch – You find this in the laundry section at most stores.
- 1 Cup Gallon of Glue
- 1 Tsp Thermochromic Color Changing Powder Pigment
How to make color changing silly putty:
- Step 1. First, pour approximately 1 cup of the glue into a mixing bowl.
Step 2. Next, mix in 1 tsp of the thermochromic color changing powder pigment. Be careful as this is easy to spill as it’s a fine powder.
Step 3. Pour 1 cup of Sta-Flo into the mixing bowl. Let this mixture set for at least 5 minutes as the glue has to soak up the Sta-Flo Liquid Starch.
- Step 4. Now it is time to mix the 2 ingredients together as best as possible. The mixture will look stringy and not well combined. You will probably think its ruined but this is normal and part of the process.
- Step 5. Finally, put the mixture on a paper towel or your countertop if it’s a solid surface. Again, let this combination set for at least 5 minutes.
- Step 6. After this time, mix again with your hands and work the glue/starch mixture until the silly putty is formed.

How to use color changing silly putty
The homemade silly putty undergoes a color transformation in response to temperature changes. We enjoy altering its color by applying ice cubes, and then restoring it to its original hue by using the warmth of our hands.
It is heat-sensitive hypercolor putty. Just use the heat of your hands. Young children can use this as a fine motor skills activity but teens will love this too. The changing colors can appear to look like twilight putty, sunburst putty and a totally new color of putty. From yellow and orange to violet and more, it is the coolest stuff.
