What do you need to make this easy homemade playdough recipe?

How to make homemade playdough that changes color:

  1. Put the flour, salt, cream of tartar, water and vegetable oil in a medium size pot
  1. Mix these ingredients together thoroughly
  2. Heat these ingredients on low temperature and mix while it’s heating until the sides start unsticking from the pan.
  3. At this time, mix in the color changing thermochromic powder pigment.  Mix it into the mix until the color is throughout and a dough begins to form.
  1. Remove the dough from the pan and place on foil or wax paper to cool.

After approximately 5-10 minutes or when the dough has fully cooled, knead the dough with your hands to completely blend all the ingredients.  Now it’s ready to use!  I like to use ice cubes to see how the dough changes color and then use the warmth from our hands to change it back!

It is that easy to use thermochromic pigment!

We have so much fun making this homemade playdough recipe. It is much more fun than store bought.

It is inexpensive enough to let each child make their own batch of play dough.  I like this method of changing the color instead of kool aid or food coloring.

Make sure to store in a ziplock bag or airtight container and it will keep for a long time.

When the playdough is room temp, what color is it? I’m hoping to make something neutral/white at room temp that changes to blue when worked with our hands. Thanks!

It really just depends on the color changing pigment that you use when making the playdough. They have lots of different options. Wed used the one that is yellow with warm temperatures and a redish/pink color with cold temperatures. They have lots of options on amazon for different colors.
