Will homemade shampoo work as well as store bought?

They work just as good if not better and don’t include harsh ingredients. Homemade shampoo recipes do not lather like store bought but still work great.
Some homemade shampoos call for aloe vera gel, raw honey and other ingredients. You can experiment with what works best for your hair type.

What can I use instead of coconut oil?

You can use 100% Shea Butter.

Do I need to use a conditioner?

You may not need conditioner since the coconut oil is moisturizing. However, some people like to use an apple cider vinegar rinse. Just use a 50/50 mix of ACV and Water.

What is the no poo method?

It typically involves rubbing baking soda and water on the scalp instead of shampoo. Some people like this method but others feel it clogs hair follicles when you massage it in.

Can I use herbs?

Yes, you can infuse the shampoo with herbs. Chamomile is often used for light hair and rosemary for dark hair.

Can you substitute almond milk for coconut milk?

  12. Ann says:

I love the idea of homemade shampoo. However, I made this following all of the instructions exactly and it did not work out well for me. After using this shampoo, it leaves my hair stringy and matted looking and feeling as if I didn’t rinse all of the shampoo out. I used the shampoo for a week, shaking the shampoo bottle well before each use and spending extra time rinsing. Unfortunately each day yielded the same result regardless of whether or not I blow dried my hair. Any thoughts about where I may have gone wrong and how to rectify this? Thank you!

    1. Kathy says:

I’m sorry that it left your hair feeling like that. You might try rinsing it twice and see if that helps. Thanks!
