Make DIY Leather Cleaner with only 2 ingredients. Clean your leather furniture easily without much work or expense.

Leather cleaner in a bottle.

I have a leather couch, and it can be expensive to purchase the leather conditioner and cleaner from furniture stores. With a little research, I learned I only need 2 ingredients to make this at home for less.

It works great and cleans and polishes your leather furniture. The vinegar cleans as the olive oil polishes for the perfect results.

Why We Love This

This simple leather cleaner recipe with only 2 ingredients will clean the entire surface of your leather furniture. It is so easy to make and use. You can use it on boots, purses, leather sofa, other furniture and more leather items.

Don’t worry about the vinegar smell because it dissipates. We love how budget friendly this cleaner is as well.

Ingredients

Supplies for leather cleaner - white vinegar, olive oil, spray bottle and cloth.
  • 1 cup white Vinegar. Regular, white vinegar.
  • ½ cup Olive Oil. Any brand of olive oil is fine.

Equipment

Spray bottle and cloth for cleaning.
  • Spray Bottle. You can use glass or plastic.
  • White Cleaning Cloth. I prefer to use a microfiber cloth.

Step By Step Instructions

Bottle with items being poured into.

Step 1. Pour the vinegar and olive oil into a spray bottle.

Top on bottle and mixture combined.

Step 2. Put the top on and gently shake until the ingredients are combined.

  • Step 3. Spray the leather cleaner directly onto the leather item and gently wipe it dry with the white cleaning cloth or damp cloth.  Use a circular motion when cleaning leather to help lift dirt out of the fibers. This will remove dust and dirt.
  • Step 4. Shake the bottle before each use.

Storage

Store in a cool place and it should last up to a few months or up to 6 months.

Spray bottle with cleaner ready to use.

Pro Tips

  • Try a test spot. I always suggest using a small amount in an inconspicuous area to make sure it does not damage your leather.
  • Shake the bottle. Make sure to periodically shake the bottle before spraying to ensure it is well combined.
  • Use a mist spray. The mist setting on the spray bottle works better than the stream.
  • Cover the floor. I recommend placing an old towel on the floor to catch any residue from the spray bottle.
  • Allow to dry. If cleaning a cushion, I like to allow it to completely dry before placing back on the couch.
  • Don’t soak the leather. Spray just enough to clean and polish but do not soak the surface.
  • Essential Oil. While optional, you can add essential oils to the mixture. I recommend lemon as it will add a fresh scent and more cleaning properties. Lemon oil is a natural disinfectant and will help to preserve the leather.
  • Repeat Use. You may need to repeat the process to remove stains.
  • Read the label. Before cleaning, be sure to read the label and make sure it is real leather.
  • Remove debris. Before using the cleaning solution, remove any crumbs or items with a vacuum or paper towel.
