Tips For DIY Toilet Cleaner Success

  1. Use fresh ingredients. Baking soda, citric acid, and vinegar lose potency over time. Check expiration dates for best results.
  2. Store properly. Keep cleaners in airtight, non-metal containers away from moisture and sunlight to maintain effectiveness.
  3. Label your mixes. Always mark the container with the contents and the date it was made. Helpful for shelf life and safety.
  4. Add essential oils wisely. Use antimicrobial oils like tea tree oil, eucalyptus, lemon, or lavender.
  5. Let it sit. After applying your DIY toilet cleaner, let it sit for 10–15 minutes before scrubbing to allow it to break down grime and stains.
  6. Use a toilet brush. Scrubbing with a brush after application ensures better stain removal and deodorizing.
  7. Avoid metal containers and tools. Some ingredients like vinegar can corrode metal. Use glass, plastic, or silicone tools instead.
  8. Make small batches. DIY cleaners don’t contain preservatives, so small, fresh batches are more effective and safer to store.
  9. Ventilate your space. Even natural ingredients like vinegar can have strong smells. Open windows or turn on the fan while cleaning.
