These are the terms you need to become familiar with when couponing at Walmart:
- Roll Back: It’s a temporary sale price offered on a particular item. Keep in mind that not all items that are on “roll back” are always a good deal or a big savings. Make sure to do your research to ensure you really are saving money.
- Price Match: Walmart will price match in store but only to their Walmart.com prices. So if you find an identical item online that is lower priced, they will match it. Just let the associate at checkout know and verify it.
They will not price match from other Walmart or Walmart Market stores. Also, they no longer will price match in store prices with competitor prices.
Things to Remember When Shopping at Walmart
- Before you leave the store make sure to check your receipt to verify that coupon discounts you expected were applied. It is easier to correct situations right after you complete the transaction than later. Once you leave and come back, it seems to get even more complicated to correct any issues.
- Remember, not all cashiers know their coupon policy. Be patient and kind and always have your coupon policy with you. You can also keep it readily available on your phone to pull up.
Walmart FAQ
1. Why do prices on items vary from store to store?
According to the Walmart website “Prices may vary from store to store because each store is required to manage its own inventory. Therefore, a manager may lower a price to clear out an overstock item, to reward customers with an in-store sale, or to compete with local merchants. It is not our policy to price match our own stores since we are not in competition with ourselves.”
You will typically find varying prices from state to state. In fact, you may even see different prices in the same town.
2. I had a horrible shopping experience, what do I do?
Your best course of action is to call Walmart’s Customer Service at (800-WAL-MART) and calmly explain what happened. In my experience your call will be followed up with a call from a local management.
This may vary based on experience. However, it is worth attempting to call.
3. Does Walmart Price Match competitor’s Prices?
If you are shopping in store and find a lower price on Walmart.com, they will price match the online price. However, Walmart does not price match with another Walmart store or competitor prices.
They did away with price matching to competitors.
4. Does Walmart double coupons?
Walmart does not double coupons.
5. What is overage and does Walmart allow it?
Overage is actually when an item exceeds the price of the product so you would have a negative balance. Their website states “In select instances, Walmart may give cash after overages are applied to the transaction total (remaining basket).”
This amount could also be applied to your other groceries if applicable.
Here is an example:
Let’s say you have a coupon for $1 off of BRAND Deodorant. You head to Walmart, and you find that BRAND deodorant for only $.97. You can still use that $1/1 coupon, but you will have 3 cents in overage.
$.97 – $1 coupon = $.03
You can then use that $.03 in overage towards other groceries in your basket.
6. Can you use coupons at self check out?
Yes, you can. The coupons can be scanned just like you would scan the item you are purchasing. There is typically a slot to put the coupons in after you scan them.
If you have any trouble, there is normally an employee monitoring the self checkout line. Just signal for assistance and they should be able to help with any coupon difficulty.
Hopefully, this process will be easy and streamlined.
7. What types of coupons can you use?
Walmart accepts manufacturer coupons that are both paper and printable coupons. If using print coupons, the coupon needs to scan and not be blurry.
It is their policy to only accept one paper manufacturer coupon per item. Identical coupons will be allowed following the manufacturer’s limitations. This can be found on the coupon. For example, the coupon might say 4 coupons for the same item.
Walmart does not have a limit on the amount of the variety of grocery coupons you can use in your total transaction.
They do not accept coupons for free products when there is not a buying requirement listed. For example, they will accept a BOGO coupon but not a coupon just for one free item.
Also, they do not accept BOGO coupons with a percentage off. If the coupon states that if you buy one item and get the other at 50% of for example, this type of coupon is not accepted.
When using a BOGO coupon, a second coupon can not be used on the item you are getting for free.
All types of coupons should not be expired and used before the expiration date.
8. What if I return an item after using a coupon?
Coupons are not given back if you return the item. You may receive the coupon value back in the original form of payment.
It is worth noting that it is at the discretion of Walmart to choose not to return an item purchased with coupons. Their coupon policy clearly states this so keep that in mind. Basically this means that your mileage may vary.
9. What are more ways to save?
If you are looking for another savings opportunity, try downloading a rebate app such as ibotta. You might also want to try shopping online and searching for Walmart coupon codes, various promo code and free shipping.
All of these are good alternatives to saving more money. I find it helpful to use multiple sources to save money.
