Save your empty egg cartons and make this Egg Carton Turtle Craft. This is the perfect craft to make with the kiddos that is easy, frugal and fun!

Turtles made out of egg carton.

This darling little turtle is so fun to make and starts from an old egg crate! Don’t you just love crafts that re-purpose items you already have at home? I know I do!

So start saving those egg carts and make the cutest little turtles! Kids will have a blast painting and make their turtle fun and colorful. Instead of tossing the egg carton when you eat the eggs, make this fun craft.

You don’t need much to get started, so you can probably just shop your house for supplies. This is a very frugal craft and a cute way to transform items.

Why We Love This

It is so simple but really fun. Kids will love seeing an old egg carton transform into a cute little turtle.

This is one of our favorite fun activities and it’s so much fun. It’s a fantastic way to use things you have at home instead of buying craft foam.

Let your kid’s creativity shine in this fun and easy DIY.

Supplies

Supplies for turtle craft - egg carton, paint, pom poms, googly eyes, glue.
  • Empty Egg Carton. Any will work.
  • Acrylic Paint. We used a light and dark green.
  • Puff Balls or Pom Pom ball. These are fun to use and look so cute.
  • Googly Eyes. Kids love these.
  • Hot Glue or Craft Glue. I prefer hot glue but if you are concerned about using that with the kids, you can use craft glue.

How to Make Turtle Egg Carton Craft

Egg carton pieces cut out and ready to use.

Step 1. Cut out the egg cups for how many you would like to make. I used scissors to remove each cup and it was pretty simple.  Then trim up the bottoms of the cups so that they can stand evenly on their own.

Step 2. Next, paint the egg cups with the color of your choice.  We chose bright green for our turtles, but any color would be fun for these crafts!

Step 3. We added spots in lighter shades of green paint, but kid can choose how they decorate it. They can use lots of vibrant colors or dark colors if they choose. Allow the paint to dry completely. This will be your turtle’s shell.

Pom Poms ready to be used on the egg carton pieces.

Step 4. Next glue the poms poms on the egg cup to represent the legs and head of the turtles.  We used hot glue for the pom pom head and turtle feet, but craft glue would work well for this step too. Then glue the small googly eyes on each side of the pom pom. After you glue googly eyes, you can see the turtle’s head.

Pro Tips

  • Glue. Learn how to make glue and save a ton of money on your craft projects.
  • Paint lightly. Don’t use excess paint or it will take the finished turtles longer to dry.
  • Trim the edges. Make sure to trim the bottom of the egg carton portion so they easily stand.
