For those of you thinking, “I wish there was a recipe for powdered creamer” – we heard you! I have been playing around with some powdered coffee creamer ‘recipes’ so I could find just the right combination of simplicity and frugality! π

Homemade Powdered Coffee Creamer
(click the picture to pin it for later)
As I mentioned before, I am not a “plain creamer” kind of girl. I like a little flavor in my coffee, french Vanilla being my fave. However, before you start adding all kinds of fun flavors to your creamer, we need to first start with a “base” creamer. This is the combination that worked the best for me:
1 Cup Powdered Milk
1/2 Cup Powdered Sugar
1 tablespoon melted coconut oil
Mix together the dry ingredients. Slowly drizzle the melted coconut oil over the dry ingredients. (Since it has been pretty warm here, I did not have to melt my coconut oil – it was already quite ‘liquidy’.) I put the lid on my jar and shook like crazy. I then took a butter knife and broke up any bigger pieces, then shook again. The heavier coconut oil tends to settle, so I suggest making this in a container that can be tightly sealed so you can mix it a bit before you use it. (I used a mason jar – love them!)
Why Coconut Oil
If you like regular, no-flavored coffee creamer, I am confident you will like this base recipe. It adds a nice creamy texture to your coffee that the store bought creamers add. You may ask, “Why the coconut oil?” Well, this adds that extra bit of creaminess that is oh so yummy in store bought creamers. I tried making this creamer without the coconut oil, and it just wasn’t the same. It is kind of hard to explain, but try your creamer in your coffee before adding the coconut oil and you will see what I mean.
This will save you money!
Is it cheaper to make your own powdered coffee creamer? Yes! Here is the cost break down, in case you are like me and like to see the proof!
Powdered Creamer costs about $4 for a 35 oz container, which is about $0.11 per ounce. (I am basing this off the Walmart Best Choice creamer – Coffee Mate would be more expensive, even with a coupon.)
Here is what I spent:
Powdered Sugar, 2 lb bag – $1.50 = $0.19 per 1/2 cup
Powdered Milk, 8 qt box – $6.98 = $0.22 per 1 cup
Coconut Oil, 14 oz – $6.42 = $0.23 per tablespoon
Now its time to get excited! Altogether my 12 ounces of homemade creamer cost just $0.64. That comes to just $0.05 per ounce!! That means if you made 35 ounces of this homemade creamer, it would only cost you $1.86! That is a far cry from $4! Can I get a woo-woo?!

Flavor Variations
If you are like me and you like a little flavor in your creamer, you can try adding these variations to the base creamer:
French Vanilla
one drop of vanilla extract to your coffee
OR 1 tablespoon of vanilla powder
Vanilla Caramel
(I know someone asked about this)
1-2 tablespoons brown sugar
1 tablespoon vanilla powder
*If you use brown sugar, this may cause your other ingredients to dry out. Try using a Brown Sugar Bear inside your sealed container to maintain the freshness.*
Hazelnut
1 tablespoon Hazelnut syrup (add very slowly – may even need to mix in blender to prevent clumps)
Irish Cream
1-2 tablespoons cocoa powder
1 teaspoon instant coffee granules
1-2 teaspoons vanilla powder
Will you join the “homemade revolution?” π Make your own creamer – liquid or powdered – and use it for a full 2 weeks. I guess you will convert your ways!

How do you store this and how long does it last?
Carrie says
You can store it on the shelf or in the fridge. It should last several months.

Can I make this without the powdered sugar? My husband likes powdered creamer, but doesn’t use sugar…

I’d too like to know whether you can make this without sugar. I usually use agave as a sweetener, and I’d like to avoid the sugar if I can. This looks great though!
Bob says
Of course you can make it without sugar. Usually powdered creamer is loaded with sugar. To make without sugar, just leave it out or add the equivalent non-sugar sweetener of your choice. BTW, agave nectar is a type of sugar. But to each his (or her) own.

Woo-hoo!

I can’t find vanilla powder. Do you think if I put all the ingredients in a blender and added a dash of vanilla extract that would work?

I have a few questions about coconut oil, vanilla powder and the hazelnut syrup….How can I email you??

Thank you so much for a powdered creamer that uses real food in the ingredients!!! This creamer is so creamy and it tastes awesome. I made the base creamer exactly as it’s written, I didn’t change anything.

How do I make vanilla powder? Thanks for the recipes, can not wait to start making these.

Can I just put a whole vanilla bean into the mixture instead of the vanilla powder or extract? Probably refrigerate for a couple weeks before using?

An impressive share! I’ve just forwarded this onto a co-worker who had been doing a

This design is spectacular! You most certainly know how to keep a reader amused.
Between your wit and your videos, I was almost moved to start my own blog (well, almost…HaHa!) Excellent job.
I really enjoyed what you had to say, and more
than that, how you presented it. Too cool!

I made this yesterday and tried it in my coffee this morning and I love it! I wont be buying any other creamers at the store. I always felt that the other creamer I used had a metallic after taste which I didn’t like at all. Thanks for the recipe. I know if I want a flavored creamer now that I would know what to do. So easy thanks to you!
