Frequently Asked Questions

Can I add essential oils?

Yes, you can. I like to add peppermint essential oil to make a luxurious Peppermint Lip Balm. Other ideas include lavender and lemon. The essential oils also add a nice scent.

Can I add Vitamin E?

Yes, a small amount of Vitamin E oil will add extra moisture to dry lips.

Will I need a double boiler?

I recommend using a double boiler to make your Homemade Lip Balm. It is a quick and easy way to melt the beeswax and coconut oil. I highly recommend one of these boilers.

If you don’t have one, you can use a microwave safe glass bowl to melt ingredients in the microwave. You can also use an oven safe bowl over a pot or small saucepan on the stove. Melt on medium to low heat.

How can I make this shinier?

Replace 1 teaspoon of the coconut oil with Jojoba Oil, Sweet Almond Oil, Olive Oil or Castor Oil. This will give the lip balm a glossier finish.

    1. Carrie says:

I have seen where some people add kool-aid to it.

      1. Donna LeMoine says:

How many containers can I fill with this recipe?

        1. Kathy says:

About 7-10 containers depending on the sizes that you use.

    2. Lynne Scaddan says:

To add colour you can use an old lip stick or scrape an unwanted eye shaddow into warm oil.

  2. fay says:

  3. Jennypher says:

I’ve just tried this and it worked as a charm.
I halved the ingredients and I added 3 drops of vitamin E oil to my mixture. Instead of almond extract I used blueberry essential oil.
I also tried to experiment adding some pink food colouring but it didn’t dissolve. It stayed at the bottom of my mixing jar so didn’t get into my lip balm (which was good cause I didn’t want pink chunks in it).
    Thanks for this easy recipe!

    1. Cheri says:

I just made this lip balm and filled Chapstick tubes. It resulted in a less smooth texture than expected for a chapstick. Difficult to apply to lips! Should I add more coconut oil or Almond oil? Please help. Thanks

  5. Retiredlady46 says:

I put my ingredients in a cleaned out pasta sauce jar & sit it in a pam of simmering water with the lid just resting so no water gets in. I pick it up once in a while using a dry towel close the lid down & swirl it. When I’m done filling my containers I throw the jar out – no clean-up!

    Great simple recipe, feels good.
Living in Arizona I go through a lot of lip balm, so glad I found your recipe.
Next time I will try it with some flavor.

  12. Sarah says:

If I wanted a lavender or fruit smell would I just add essential oils? How can I change the color?

    1. carrie says:

You can add essential oils as long as they are the ones that can be ingested. On the color, you can use food dye or mica for the color on the lip balm. Thank you.

  13. Heather says:

How many tubes of lip balm will this recipe make?

    1. carrie says:

This makes about 3-4 depending on how much you put in each container.

  14. dee dee says:

i think there is a typo in the list of ingredients. i made this and had to keep adding coconut oil because 1/2 cup grated bees wax waa too much. i used the bees wax beads but should not have made such a diff. i ended up with so much lip balm i could open up my own business! hope this was helpful.

    1. Wendy Brown says:

How much more coconut oil did you add.

  15. Sarah says:

I tried this recipe and it is a little difficult to get the product on my finger. I think it needs another oil or butter maybe. I did add peppermint and the smell is wonderful.

  16. Marina says:

Carrie, will this consistency stand up in a roll-up lip balm tube?

  17. Angela says:

Do I add the essential oil instead of the almond oil? Or all together? And how much of the essential oils should I use?

    1. carrie says:

You can use essential oils instead of Almond oils. I would use 2-3 drops. Thanks.

  18. N says:

Coconut oil will start melting once it gets warmer than room temperature I believe so will this mix melt if it’s a little warmer than usual? I’m worried the balm will turn into liquid like coconut oil does sometimes.

    1. carrie says:

The beeswax helps the lip balm stay in the solid form so it won’t melt at room temperature. I have made this several times and have never had an issue with it melting. Thank you!

  19. Melissa says:

I’m having a little trouble getting the product on my finger to apply. Can I add something else that will make it a little easier?

    1. carrie says:

The beeswax makes it thicker, I would recommend adding more coconut oil until it’s the consistency that you prefer. If it has already hardened, you can transfer to a microwave safe bowl and re-melt it down to add in more coconut oil. Thanks!

  20. Desiree Jaworski says:

Do you measure the coconut oil in solid form and then melt it. Or do you measure it already melted? Mine turned out very wet and oily….I measured mine solid then melted it???!!

    1. carrie says:

I measure the coconut oil in its sold form. If it’s very wet and not solidifying, I would add more beeswax as this is what helps it turn into a solid. Thanks.

  21. Elane says:

  22. Bobbi says:

Can I use hibiscus powder for color?

  23. Teresa says:

I have made many lip balms, chapsticks, etc. I have never had success with extracts. They are usually water based. Water and oil do not mix. So make sure your flavoring is oil based.

  24. AdrienneKay says:

You can also add a drop or 2 of lanolin which will increase the benefits of this product. Thank you for the recipe.
