How are scrunchies better for your hair?
My daughters and I love scrunchies over hair ties because they don’t leave any marks in our hair. Plus, they are more comfortable and don’t give us a headache.
We prefer to wear scrunchies and now that I know how to make them, it’s even better!
What are scrunchies made of?
With just a few simple ingredients, you can make scrunchies. It is hard to believe but scrunchies are just made out of fabric and elastic!
What do you need to make a scrunchie?
With just a few simple supplies, you can make these DIY hair scrunchies.
How do you make scrunchies with elastic?
1. Cut a piece of fabric 4″ wide x 20″ or 22″ long. Either length will work.
Fold the fabric in half, right side in and pin. Stitch the long edge of the fabric and remove the pins.
2. Next, turn the fabric right side out. I found the easiest way to do this was to thread your finger into the fabric and using your thumb and finger roll up the fabric.
3. Cut a piece of elastic 9″ long. Thread the elastic through the fabric. Attach a safety pin to one end of the elastic.
I taped the elastic to a pencil, wrapping masking tape around the elastic and pencil on each end. Thread the pencil (with elastic) onto the fabric, scrunching it up as you fish it through.
When the elastic comes out of the opposite end, remove the tape and discard. Remove the pencil and you should have elastic in the fabric. Tie the elastic in a knot.
4. Thread the elastic into the scrunchie so the knot is not at the opening but inside of the fabric. Fold over the ends of the fabric and insert one end into the other. Stitch the scrunchie shut, back stitching each end.
Remove from machine and trim excess thread.
5. Repeat making as many scrunchies as you’d like.

use a length of elastic a little longer than the fabric you make the scrunchie. lay the elastic on the right side of the fabric even at one end and extending over the other end. fold the fabric lengthwise over the elastic and pin the end together where the elastic is even, pinning through the elastic. pin the lengthwise edge to sew. sew across the pinned end first, making sure that you sew the elastic firmly in place, then sew the length edges together. pull the elastic to work the the scrunchy right side out. next scrunch it up and cut the elastic to the desired length and baste it to the open end of fabric. fold the cut end of the fabric to the inside and sew as directed above.
I find stitching the elastic makes the scrunchie smoother and also stronger than a knot that could come undone
