It is actually very simple and you only need a few simple materials. Keep reading to see just how easy this is.
Materials for diy blanket scarf:
- 1-½ to 2 yards plaid fabric (Make sure the pattern is on both sides.)
- Measuring tape
- Scissors
- Seam Ripper (optional but helpful) or safety pin
How much fabric do I need for a blanket scarf?
We chose the Sportswear fabric 52″ wide in black cream buffalo check. (The material was from Joanns and the bolt said: 100% acrylic, dry clean only.) You will need about 2 yards to make the scarf.
How do you make a blanket scarf?
Trim 3 edges of the fabric to make them straight. Follow the line of plaid as straight as you can. Fold one corner of 2 straight edges up to the opposite edge, creating a square shape of your fabric. Trim the excess fabric that extends beyond.
Begin to fray your fabric. Start by gently pulling a few pieces of thread away from the fabric. You can use a seam ripper if necessary. Continue to pull away the thread, being careful that you don’t break the strands. Fray the material about 1/2″.

I chose this fabric vs flannel because it was SUPER SOFT! However, you can just as easily make a flannel blanket scarf.
Just purchase the flannel material and make the blanket flannel scarf following the same instructions above. Easy!

You want a fabric that is sturdy enough to hold its shape. The sportswear fabric or flannel both work great to make the blanket scarf.
