Step By Step Instructions

Clothes pins painted different colors.

Step 1. First, paint the clothespin the colors of your choice.  This will be your butterfly’s body.  We set ours on a paper plate to allow it to dry.  You can also color with markers if you don’t want to paint.

Coffee filters in different colors.

Step 2. Then color the coffee filters with the markers.  Use the colors that you choose.  The entire coffee filter does not have to be colored as the colors will spread in the next step.

Water sprayed on filters.

Step 3. Next spray the coffee filter with water.  We placed ours on a baking sheet for easy clean-up and used a spray bottle.  The water blends the colors together and gives the wings a vibrant look!

Step 4. We love doing this step.  Set them aside to dry.  Luckily, they do not take long since the coffee filters are a thin material.

Step 5. Now it’s time to assembly your butterfly!  Once the coffee filters are dried, pinch the filter in the middle and pin with the clothes pin to form the butterfly shape.

Step 6. Then use the markers to add eyes and decorate the clothespin if you would like. You can also glue googly eyes if you prefer. Then make the antenna with the pipe cleaner and glue to the top of the clothespin with a hot glue gun.
