It really is very simple, and you can make lots of pretty things with clay. The first DIY can be a little tricky just as you learn how to make these, but it is so fun and easy to create different textures.

I learned a lot along the way and the mistakes helped me learn even more. Getting the technique down pat really helped with crafting and making more jewelry in the future.

There are lots of options here for polymer clay. We used Sculpey Bake Shop Variety Pack polymer clay, but you can use the brand you prefer.

Which Polymer Clay is Used for Jewelry?

It is best to decide which project you want to make first and then choose the type of clay.  For instance, some are better to make jewelry than others but if you are making a clay animal, it wouldn’t matter.

Just choose a project and then check out the polymer clay options here and get the one best suited for the DIY project you decide to make.

You might also want to use clay tools such as an acrylic roller to help with your creations. This is optional but makes it much easier.

We really like the Sculpey Bake Shop Variety Pack polymer clay to make these charms. I think they turned out great.

Pro Tips

  • Make the hole close to the edge. Put the small holes, made with the toothpick, close to the edge of the jewelry. I do not recommend doing this after they are baked with a drill. It is much easier to do this prior to baking.
  • Clay Tools are helpful. You might also want to use clay tools, such as clay cutters, craft knife and more, to help with molding your creations. This is optional but makes it much easier. You can find these at your local craft stores.
  • Look for items at home. You can buy kits of tools for this clay, or you can use bobby pins, utility knife, razor blade, paper clip, toothbrush, or a hairpin. Use what works best for you and your budget.
  • Cure the clay. Polymer clay can break easily if it is not baked properly. Just make sure to follow the instructions to ensure the clay is cured properly.
  • Earrings. You can also make polymer clay earrings. Glue earring posts to the back of the clay to make earrings. Allow the earring backs or hooks to dry completely before using.
  • Workspace. Make sure to place something on your work area to protect your table or counter.
  • Cookie Cutters. You can even use cookie cutters to shape the clay.
  • Shiny finish. If you prefer a shiny finish instead of a matte finish, make sure to seal, sand and polish with polycrylic.
  • Oven thermometer. Use an oven thermometer to ensure the oven temperature is accurate.
  • Sand the edges. If you have rough edges after baking, use sandpaper to smooth.
