easy embellished ornament with hot glue

It is DAY 3 of our 12 days of Homemade Christmas ornaments. I’m so excited to share this super easy and super fun Homemade ornament idea. We used hot glue to “jazz” up our plain ornaments. Add a little spray paint and you have yourself a fancy homemade ornament.

Back when I was in college. I did this a lot. Since I had nothing I stocked up on cheap ornaments, made several different designs with hot glue, let it dry and then spray painted it.  They looked great and they were frugal. 🙂

All you need is a pack of ornaments, some hot glue, and a can of spray paint. Plain, clear ornaments can be bought at the craft store in a multipack for just a few dollars – you can even buy colored ones at Dollar Tree. This ornament is nearly fool proof and mistakes are easily fixed.

Supplies Needed:

  • Large clear glass ball ornament
  • white spray paint (or any other color you like)
  • painters tape
  • hot glue gun/stick
  • alcohol/paper towel
need a glass ornament - or from dollar store

Directions:

Wipe the ornament down well using a paper towel soaked in alcohol this will remove dirt and oils.

Draw patterns on glass ornament with a glue gun. Make a mistake? No problem just wait a minute for it to cool and peel it right off. Cover the ornament with as simple or as ornate a design as you. Wrap hanger and top in painters tape, and tie a string through the hanger.

spray paint the ornament

The simplest way to paint a hanging object is to hang it from a tree or hook – that way you can access all sides at once, and it will dry faster and more evenly.

Paint a very light tack coat to create a primer layer on your ornament and dry for 5 minutes. Spray 12 more coats until you reach your desired shade, letting it dry for 5 minutes between each coat.

After final coat, let dry for 23 hours. Add a some twine or pretty ribbon and hang in your tree.

Don’t you think this would be so fun to make? It would be a fun addition to any tree.
