7 Tips for Back to School Shopping at the Dollar Tree Store
Back to School Shopping at the Dollar Tree Store isn’t quite as easy as you might think. In fact, not all deals are the best deals at Dollar Tree Store. Some are GREAT deals though. So today I wanted to show you back to school Shopping at the Dollar Tree Store versus the Big Box Stores.
This is the time of year when thrifty moms and dads start back to school shopping since they know the sales at big-box stores such as Target and Walmart are best mid-Summer. Waiting until late August is a rookie mistake; stores capitalize on the last minute rush by charging full price. Another potential mistake is assuming that your best value for back-to- school shopping is Dollar Tree or other “everything for a dollar or less stores.”

What to buy when Back to School Shopping at the Dollar Tree Store?
Use the following guidelines for what items to purchase at Dollar Tree Store to save money and what to look for at the big-box stores.
1. Buy Quality Crayons, Folders, and Markers:
Some school supplies available at Dollar Tree are not the highest quality. Flimsy binders, overly waxy crayons, and markers that may dry out more quickly mean you’ll need to replace them sooner. Spending a little more at big-box stores will most likely save you money in the long run.
Don’t forget about loyalty benefits. With the Target REDcard (either a debit or credit option available), you instantly save 5% at checkout. Several times throughout the summer, they also have a free gift card option if you spend a certain dollar amount on school supplies. If Five Star folders are 2/$2 at Target and you pay with a REDcard, the cost per folder is $0.95. If you also qualify for the gift card, it’s as if they are free! That means if you shop the back to school sales, you can actually save more money by buying quality items at the big box stores
2. Not all paper products are created equal.
Paper products such as construction paper, poster board, project boards, foam board, lined manuscript tablets, sticky notes, and doodle pads are all available at Dollar Tree for less (in some cases, significantly less) than you will typically find them at Walmart or Target. The quality is the same so stick with Dollar Tree store on these back to school lists.
However, stick with the big-box stores, though, for packages of loose-leaf paper, spiral notebooks, composition notebooks, binder tabs, index cards, and folders. During the big summer sales, you will definitely spend less on those items at Walmart or Target.
Dollar Tree has several different styles of planners, whether you’re looking for monthly or weekly. You’ll not get as many design choices as you will at big-box stores, but the $1 price tag can’t be beat. If your student is prone to misplacing things or is hard on their supplies, you can buy 2 or 3 planners at Dollar Tree for around the same price you’ll find them at Target or Walmart.
4. Glue, Tape and Glue Sticks:
Glue, tape, and glue sticks are usually going to be a better value at big-box stores during mid-Summer sales. Dollar Tree has some good brand-name options, like a Scotch take 2-pack and a 3 pack of Elmer’s glue sticks, but the selection is limited. If you feel a certain loyalty to name brands, stick with the big-box stores.
5. Stock up on learning aides at Dollar Tree.
Especially if you have a younger student, make sure to go to Dollar Tree for learning aides. They have great flash cards, sticker books, coloring books, and workbooks you can use at home to supplement what they are learning at school. The selection is fantastic (better than most big-box stores), and the price is very budget friendly.
6. Office Supplies: Paper Clips, erasers, and more!
Small office supplies are much cheaper at the Dollar Tree store. You will save a lot more money by buying them at Dollar tree versus the big box stores. You can get a package of paper clips for $1 instead of $4 at the big box stores so the savings really do add up quickly.
7. Teacher gift ideas too!
Dollar tree is great for teacher gifts. While you are planning your back to school shopping snag a few school supplies for them too. You can make them a very frugal basket of pens, sticky notes, stickers and more at a fraction of the price of the big box stores!
