I love repurposing items in my home and I thought it would be fun to give you some different ideas to reuse cans! I know that might sound silly, but it is so easy to reuse cans in so many different ways, it is silly not to share these ideas. 😉 Let’s talk about some of my favorite ways to turn empty metal cans into something fun and useful.
7 Ways to Reuse Cans throughout your Home
1. Utensil Holder
The first thing I ever did with my cans was spray paint them a nice red. I just bought cheap spray paint from Dollar General and picked a color that I thought would pop. I love using these spray painted metal cans to put plastic ware in during a get together. These cans hold just the right amount and were way cheaper than a fancier Utensil Holder.
2. Biscuit Cutter
This may sound very simple, but I can’t tell you how many times I have been making biscuits or cookies and been frustrated that I didn’t have a circle cookie cutter. Just make sure your can is clean and dry and you’re all set.
3. Money Banks
Each of our kids has 3 “buckets” for their money. They are labeled – spend, save and give. The buckets we use at home are similar to these small pails, but it would be so easy to have your kiddos pick a color to paint their cans and then use some puffy paint to decorate them. This is a great way to start teaching kids about money.
4. Desk Organizer
One of my boys has a desk that I think grows new pens and pencils in the night. They always seem to very everywhere! If you are battling a similar problem, why not grab an empty can and use it to organize pens, pencils, scissors, etc. on your desk. If you don’t want to spray paint the cans, you can simply glue on some scrapbook paper. If you use a few different complimentary colors, you’ll not only have a nice little desk organizer, but a beautiful centerpiece as well.
5. Flower Vase
My kids love bringing in wild flowers. They are beautiful, even if only for a short time. Unfortunately, wild flowers don’t often fit in a typical flower vase, but a metal can works great!
6. Herb Pots
Growing your own herbs are pretty easy. If you’d like to try this for yourself, simply paint a few cans a color that compliments your kitchen. Make sure to punch some small holes in the bottom of the can before you put the potting soil inside. Then, just plant your herb seeds, water and you’re all set. I think you’ll be surprised how quickly these take off.
7. Make up Brush Holder
After you quickly paint the cans, you have have a cute make up brush holder. My make up brushes tend to get ruined and destroyed in my makeup bag or drawer. However, you can keep them save now in a reused can.
Those may seem like pretty simple projects, but that’s the idea! Wash out those cans and pick your favorite DIY project.

I use mine to organize my son’s arts and crafts table… markers, play dough accessories, paint brushes, etc.
